Support for Tasmania’s most vulnerable never stronger

Members,

The Rockliff Liberal Government is doing what matters by supporting Tasmanians when they need it the most.

Acting Minister for Housing and Construction, Roger Jaensch said that the Report on Government Services has demonstrated our commitment to ensuring that when Tasmanians need help, they get it.

“We have, year in and year out, continued to increase our support for vulnerable Tasmanians, no matter where they live in our great State,” Minister Jaensch said.

“Positively, we have seen a decrease in the number of Tasmanians accessing our Specialist Homelessness Services which is a direct result of our strong progress on improving Tasmania’s housing outcomes.

“In 2022-23, 6,672 clients were assisted by the Specialist Homelessness Service, compared to 6,977 in 2021-22, a 4.4 per cent decrease.

“There were fewer unassisted requests for assistance, we have improved the rate of meeting client needs for accommodation for the sixth year running and we have continued to increase support when and where it is needed.

“But not only this, we are seeing these improvements because our Government’s long-term plan is working. Our investment of over $48 million a year in Specialist Homelessness Services is doing its job of supporting vulnerable Tasmanians while they get back on their feet.

“These numbers are positive, but what really matters to Tasmanians is the bricks and mortar and tangible services that house and assist Tasmanians.

“Just like the first of its kind men’s shelter in Devonport, our nation-leading modular home program and our Youth2Independence program – we are getting on with the job of supporting Tasmanians whenever they need it.”
