At North East Link we understand that strong sports clubs help to build a strong sense of community.
On Saturday 9 July, Watsonia Sporting Club held a Welcome to Country at Binnak Park, with both their Reserves and Senior Football teams taking the field wearing an Indigenous guernsey to mark NAIDOC week, in which North East Link proudly helped sponsor.
The guernsey was designed by talented artist Jade Kennedy IV, an artist of Mutti Mutti, Tatti Tatti, Waddi Waddi and Noongar heritage and is named Dreaming Tree. It features Dreaming Tree, a symbol of the collection of all dreaming, drawing strength from the deep and wide-reaching roots of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture across vast nations and languages.
“It means a lot to get the opportunity to bring about cultural identity at the club and hopefully that will continue to build and draw not only Indigenous players but Indigenous families to the club”, reflected Jade on his experience.
Six new sports pavilions will be built across the north east as part of a $68 million investment to help sports clubs thrive while North East Link gets built.
So far 3 have been built with Binnak Park, home to Watsonia Sporting Club, being one of them.
