Surry Hills RES investigators charge man over importation of ephedrine, NSW

Surry Hills Region Enforcement Squad (RES) investigators have charged a man as part of an ongoing investigation into the importation of prohibited drugs.

Last month, detectives from Surry Hills RES established Strike Force Tapestry to investigate the importation of ephedrine into NSW from Hong Kong.

During the investigation, detectives intercepted a parcel declared to contain 20 pairs of scissors.

The contents were examined, and investigators identified about 5kg of an unknown powder concealed in the cardboard packaging.

The powder was tested and returned a presumptive positive result for ephedrine.

Following extensive investigations, Surry Hills RES investigators executed two search warrants at homes at Homebush West yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 5 August 2020).

During the searches, police seized electronic storage devices and 38g of prohibited drugs, believed to be ephedrine.

About 5pm, a 24-year-old man was arrested during a vehicle stop at Homebush West.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, Surry Hills RES investigators seized two mobile phones, documentation and $1600 cash.

The man was taken to Auburn Police Station and charged with import commercial quantity border-controlled precursor.

He was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court today (Thursday 6 August 2020).

Investigations under Strike Force Tapestry are continuing.

Anyone with information about the importation of prohibited drugs is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
