Swan Hill Community Harmony Day Celebrates Diversity and Unity

The Swan Hill community is gearing up to celebrate Harmony Day, an annual event dedicated to promoting cultural diversity and fostering inclusivity.

Harmony Day committee member, Camille Cullinan, said this year’s event would be hosted at Riverside Park on Saturday, March 2 and it would be a vibrant celebration of the cultures that make up our region.

“In a thoughtful move to accommodate the diverse community, the event has been scheduled earlier than usual to avoid overlapping with Ramadan, ensuring broader participation and engagement.

“From 4pm to 8pm, Riverside Park will come alive with a myriad of activities and entertainment for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy.

“There will be something for everyone with activities including children’s crafts and activities, a petting zoo, and games and activity areas facilitated by Reclink, catering to teenagers and those young at heart.

“For those interested in immersive cultural experiences, Afro-Brazilian drumming workshops and Matakupaat (Platypus) dance workshops will offer opportunities to learn and participate in vibrant cultural expressions,” Ms Cullinan said.

Ms Cullinan said a Traditional Costume parade would also be a major highlight.

“There will be entertainment throughout the day featuring captivating performances by Indonesian dancers, a Fijian singing group, and a Timorese ensemble. Local talents, including a didgeridoo player and an Aboriginal dance group, will showcase our regions rich culture.

“Of course, no celebration is complete without delicious cuisine, and Harmony Day will offer a variety of food stalls representing Afghan, Indigenous Australian, Fijian, Hong Kong, Indonesian, Malaysian, African and Korean cuisines.

“Additionally, community stalls will provide valuable information about local services, while specialty stalls will offer African clothing and items, henna art, and a craft display featuring artwork by local artists of all abilities,” she said.

Ms Cullinan said this year, organisers had also introduced a rest area where attendees can take a moment to relax and enjoy a cuppa, fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all.

“Swan Hill Community Harmony Day is a testament to the community’s commitment to celebrating diversity, promoting understanding, and building a harmonious society where everyone feels valued and included,” she said.
