Sydney Football Stadium Redevelopment Approved

The first stage of the redevelopment of the Sydney Football Stadium, involving its demolition and a concept proposal for a new stadium, has been approved subject to strict conditions.

The Department of Planning and Environment has worked closely with the local community, government agencies, and key stakeholders during the assessment process.

The Department undertakes rigorous assessment of major projects in NSW, including State Significant Developments (SSD) and follows strict guidelines in all assessments.

The Sydney Football Stadium redevelopment was assessed as an SSD application under the Environmental Planning and Assessment (EP&A) Act.

Approval conditions include:

  • Setting up a Community Consultative Committee (CCC) before any heavy demolition starts.
  • Alignment with the Moore Park Masterplan to ensure the proposed development can contribute positively toward the surrounding space over the next 20 years,
  • Design excellence of any new stadium and surrounding landscaping, public domain and open space,
  • Noise management relating to future operation of the proposed stadium to be prepared in consultation with the Environment Protection Authority,
  • Traffic studies and Green Travel Plans for major events,
  • Development of Anti-social behavioural strategies for operation of the future stadium,
  • Broader community use of the SFS site and surrounds, and
  • Reducing noise and traffic impacts during construction in which the concrete crusher must be fully enclosed in an acoustic shed / enclosure to reduce potential dust, noise and surface water impacts.

Infrastructure NSW (INSW) has sought planning approvals in two separate stages, the first being its demolition and a concept approval. The second stage application will detail the final built form and operation of a new stadium.
