Take road safety challenge

Michael Ferguson,Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

This week is National Yellow Ribbon Road Safety Week – a timely reminder to drive so others survive.

We have had a devastating year on our roads, with every death deeply affecting Tasmanian families and entire communities.

The Tasmanian Government and Road Safety Advisory Council are working to make our roads safer, in line with our Towards Zero Action Plan 2020-2024, and we want everyone to play their part in helping to reduce serious injuries and fatalities by using our roads safely and responsibly.

Sticking to the road rules is essential to keep our roads safe. As part of Road Safety Week this year, there will be a Road Rules Challenge. Entrants can go to www.roadrulechallenge.com.au to complete a multiple choice quiz to go into the draw to win one of six iPads.

Road Safety Week began as an annual event eight years ago to remember and honour those lives lost on our roads, and encourage the community to pledge to drive safely.

The symbol of the event is yellow and major landmark buildings, including the Burnie Makers Centre, Launceston Town Hall and the Salvation Army Centre in Lutana, will be lit in yellow to mark the week.

You can pick up a free yellow ribbon for your vehicle, or one to wear, at Service Tasmania outlets.

I encourage people to take the pledge to drive so others survive – go to www.roadsafetyweek.com.au to take the pledge and you can also download information and share it through social media.

The most important thing we can all do – and not just this week, but every day – is drive so others survive.
