Take your kids on a Story Walk these school holidays 11 December

Get outside, explore nature and enjoy story time with your kids at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden these school holidays

Sunshine Coast Council Libraries and Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden have joined forces again to promote First 5 Forever, an early literacy initiative, through the annual Story Walk.

Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston said children’s early literature was critical to their development and a Story Walk was an innovative way to experience a children’s picture book.

“A Story Walk gets kids and their parents or carers out in nature, exploring, talking, playing and importantly – reading,” Cr Johnston said.

“From December 12 until January 27, 2021, the pages of All the Ways to be Smart will be enlarged and placed along a pathway at the gardens, so children and their families can follow the pages and read the book during their walk.

“The rhyming text in the story is great fun when read aloud, promotes discussions and celebrates children’s uniqueness.

“Combined with the Summertime Playscape installed at the Botanic Gardens, this book fosters and celebrates the importance of learning through play – another important element of a child’s early learning.”

The title is written by children’s author Davina Bell, illustrated by Allison Colpoys and published by Scribe Publications. It has won numerous awards including the ABIA 2019 Children’s Picture Book of the Year and has been published across the world in multiple languages.

First 5 Forever is a universal family literacy program that aims to improve literacy in children by encouraging the community to work together and spend time with our children – talking, reading, singing and playing.
