Are you looking for a new fresh and fun way to enjoy story time with your children? Then head to the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden these school holidays.
Sunshine Coast Libraries and Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden have joined forces to promote the annual First 5 Forever early literacy initiative with a Story Walk!
This innovative experience combines reading a children’s picture book while walking in nature.
From December 13 until January 28, 2020 the pages of ‘Red House, Blue House, Green House, Tree House!’ will be enlarged and placed along a botanical pathway, so children and their families can follow the pages and read the book on their walk.
Community Portfolio Cr Jenny McKay said a Story Walk is an absolutely brilliant idea.
“The story chosen for the Story Walk in the botanic gardens is a perfect book to share with young children to read out loud and identify the colours of their world,” said Cr McKay.
“Children will just love being captivated by the rhythmic verse and the bright, bold illustrations to discover, with each step of the way.”
The picture book is written by award-winning children’s author Jane Godwin, illustrated by Jane Reiseger and published by Affirm Press.
The title was shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council of Australia Award for new Illustrator in 2019. This award aims to recognise and encourage new talent in the field of Australian children’s book illustration.
“The Story Walk encourages an early joy for reading and develops early literacy skills. It’s also wonderful to see kids outside having a good time,” said Cr McKay.
After you close the book on your Story Walk, let the family explore, create and connect with nature in the bushland with muddy, musical and crafty activities and workshops available.
The Summertime Playscape at the botanic gardens offers interactive installations for kids and families to enjoy including, a circle of giant xylophones, a labyrinth to explore and a tiny village of houses made from mud – one not to be missed!
For those looking for hands-on play, why not try constructing a little cubby house, have a go at weaving and lantern making or cool down with a water fight.
