Taking Tasmania’s defence industries to world

Jeremy Rockliff, Minister for Trade

Tasmania’s defence industry capabilities will soon be on display to one of the largest security and defence expos in the world as they take off for an international trade mission to the UK.

Premier and Minister for Trade, Jeremy Rockliff, said the mission, jointly led by Tasmania’s Defence Advocate Rear Admiral Steve Gilmore and Coordinator General John Perry would focus on strengthening existing relationships and fostering new partnerships.

“This mission will build connections with key international partners and lock-in new opportunities for Tasmania’s defence supply and advanced manufacturing industries,” the Premier said.

“The Defence and Security Equipment International convention will feature more than 2800 suppliers and buyers from around the world, giving Tasmanian businesses the chance to showcase their capabilities to leaders from military, government and industry.”

The Tasmanian delegation includes AERIUS Marine, the Australian Maritime College, CBG Systems, Currawong Engineering, Liferaft Systems Australia, Muir Engineering and Pivot Maritime International. Fortifyedge will also be attending to look at the opportunities in the security sector.

These organisations have already been making their mark in defence circles over the past few years and by supporting their expansion plans, through missions like this, we are helping to boost opportunities for our state and economy.

Minister for Advanced Manufacturing and Defence Industries, Madeleine Ogilvie, said it was fantastic to see so many of Tasmania’s defence and security businesses representing the State on the global stage.

“Tasmanian businesses are leading the world with their solutions. The more Tasmanian companies that get involved in the defence supply sector, the more it increases the visibility of our capabilities and products, and the more contracts it promises to attract,” Minister Ogilvie said.

“These industries are so important to the Rockliff Liberal Government’s long-term plan to continue to grow our economy and create jobs.”

The delegation will also meet with major defence and advanced manufacturing companies including Ocean Infinity, Thales UK, L3 Harris, QinetiQ, Collins Aerospace and Hanwha.

Hanwha is the key international partner in the Australian Army’s LAND 400 Phase 3, Infantry Fighting Vehicle program, the largest defence contract ever awarded involving Tasmanian businesses.

“Our participation at the Defence and Security Equipment International, underscores our commitment to international collaboration, innovation and the sophistication and strength of our defence supply sector,” the Premier said.
