Tasmania keeps powering ahead with the nation’s leading renewables plan

Members,

The Rockliff Liberal Government is proud that Tasmania continues to enjoy clean and reliable renewable electricity and has the lowest, or amongst the lowest, regulated electricity prices in Australia.

Tasmania’s nation-leading energy industry is confirmed by the latest independent report demonstrating that last financial year we enjoyed the most reliable supply of all jurisdictions, a major increase in energy supplied and an increase in the export of our renewable energy across Basslink.

”The latest 2021-22 Energy in Tasmania Report from the independent Tasmanian Economic Regulator noted there were no significant electricity transmission or distribution issues in 2021-22 and Tasmania exported more energy across Basslink than it imported during the year,” Minister Barnett said.

”Mr Joe Dimasi also said that electricity consumption in Tasmania grew by 4.4 per cent, the highest level since 2018-19. This supports the Government’s goal to generate more supply to support industry growth, keep our economy strong and create more jobs.

”He noted that while the national market experienced supply issues, Tasmania did not.

”The report states that on-island generation increased by 12.9 per cent, driven by an increase in hydro-electric generation, but this was mainly due to lower than average generation the previous year.

”Tasmanian Government schemes to encourage more energy efficiency, like roof-top solar, have also contributed to a 13.5 per cent increase in roof-top solar exports, an increase in the number of installations and an increase in the average generation capacity of these installations.

”Pleasingly the number of complaints regarding the quality and reliability of supply received by TasNetworks fell by 14 per cent, significantly lower than any of the past four years, and the number of complaints to Aurora decreased in 2021-22 by 9.7 per cent.

The Regulator’s report also said that the progression of several large scale wind generation projects may be contingent on the construction of the proposed Marinus Link interconnector.

”Marinus Link and Battery of the Nation, which has the support of the Tasmanian, Victorian and Australian Governments, are regarded as a priority projects under the Rewiring the Nation program,” Minister Barnett said.

”Marinus Link has begun an international tender process as it heads towards the Final Investment Decision in December 2024.

”It will mean more jobs for Tasmanians, attracting billions of dollars of investment in regional areas of Tasmania, and it will strengthen Tasmania’s energy security, place downward pressure on prices while further growing on-island energy use.

”The Rockliff Liberal Government also understands that electricity prices contribute to cost-of-living pressures which is why we have the most generous concessions of any state.

”We also have $100 million allocated to two Energy Saver Loan Schemes and we have allocated $33 million towards the Federal Government’s proposed National Energy Bill Relief program to support households and small businesses that need it the most,” Minister Barnett said.
