Tasmania set for another big summer of sport

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Recreation

With the AFL and NRL Grand Finals in the rearview mirror, it’s a quick transition to another bumper summer of sport ahead.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, joined Tasmanian Tigers’ Men’s coach Jeff Vaughan at Hobart Airport today as the team departed for their first match of the season.

“I’d like to wish Jeff, captain Jordan Silk and the rest of the team all the best for their upcoming match against South Australia,” Minister Street said.

“The next few weeks see a strong start to our summer of sport this year, with not only the Tigers’ men’s team lining up but also our champion WNCL team against the ACT Meteors next Sunday, the Hurricanes’ WBBL campaign beginning at UTAS Stadium later this month and our Tassie Tigers Hockey Teams kicking off their Hockey One season this Friday night against HC Melbourne.

“This Friday will see our JackJumpers’ first home game of the season at MyState Bank Arena, which I’m sure will be a sell-out,” Minister Street said.

The Rockliff Liberal Government continues to invest heavily into community sporting infrastructure to enable all Tasmanians to be active and create a strong start for those wanting to pursue sport to the highest levels.

“Last week we extended the closing date for the first small grants round of our $10 million Active Infrastructure Grants program which gives sporting clubs and councils access to grants up to $70,000,” Minister Street continued.

“This round of grants now closes at 2pm this Wednesday 4 October, so please get your applications in,” Minister Street concluded.

The large grants round, giving access to grants between $70,001 and $500,000 remains open for applications up to 13 November.
