The Rockliff Liberal Government is showing its support for the State’s pharmacists this World Pharmacists Day.
Minister for Health, Guy Barnett, thanked pharmacists for the role they play in providing healthcare to Tasmanians.
“Pharmacists are highly valued health professionals and that is why our Government is expanding the services they will be able to deliver to Tasmanians,” Minister Barnett said.
“As part of our recently announced reforms, we are establishing a nation-leading pilot program that will allow pharmacists to prescribe medication to remote residents in areas where access to a GP is limited.
“This will occur in collaboration with a medical practitioner, who will make a diagnosis and delegate the function of prescribing medication to a pharmacist.
“Our nation-leading reforms will also enable community pharmacists to prescribe medication to aged care residents in collaboration with the resident’s GP.”
Pharmacists will also soon be able to prescribe antibiotics for uncomplicated urinary tract infections and administer cervical cancer vaccines.
The Rockliff Liberal Government is sticking to it’s long-term plan by investing in innovative healthcare models to ensure all Tasmanians, no matter where they live, have access to the healthcare they deserve.
Minister Barnett said by better utilising pharmacists’ skills and experience, we can significantly improve patient care across Tasmania.
