Technology to protect our reputation around world

Guy Barnett,Minister for Trade

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is proud of our booming export industry and protecting the international reputation of our products is increasingly important.

Place-of-origin can be a valuable asset for Tasmanian businesses looking to sell their premium products internationally given our reputation for quality, and it’s an asset worth protecting.

Partnering with high-end Tasmanian specialty timber producer Hydrowood, we’re developing a new provenance guarantee system that could eventually be rolled-out across all Tasmanian exporters.

This new Tasmanian-origin tracing technology will allow buyers to use an encrypted QR code on Hydrowood’s products to verify that they are genuine.

Hydrowood’s harvesting method at Lake Pieman allows the business to produce specialty Tasmanian timbers including sassafras, Huon pine and myrtle, which are in high demand globally by artisans and craftspeople.

The Hydrowood provenance platform will integrate with the Tasmanian Government’s existing VR platform (vr.tasmanian.com.au) and if successful the technology will be made available to other Tasmania’s exporting businesses.

With fraudsters around the world looking to cash-in on our name to sell substandard products as premium Tasmanian, this technology provides international buyers with the confidence that they are receiving genuine Tasmanian goods.

The Tasmanian Government is justifiably proud of our quality produce and exporters and this new technology will be a valuable tool to help protect Tasmania’s reputation.
