Territorians encouraged to have their say on road safety plan

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is continuing to work towards zero lives lost on Territory roads with the release of a discussion paper that will inform the Towards Zero Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028.

The discussion paper sets out proposed actions across 10 priority areas to be addressed over the next 5 years, building on the successes of the Towards Zero Action Plan 2018-2022 and continuing to implement actions to reduce road trauma on Territory roads.

More than 20 key road safety stakeholders including NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services, St Johns Ambulance, Kidsafe NT and regional and town councils have contributed to the development of the discussion paper and the proposed actions.

Consultation is open now and closes Monday 19 February 2024. To learn more visit haveyoursay.nt.gov.au here

Quotes to attribute to Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Joel Bowden:

“Improving road safety for all Territorians and visitors to the Territory is an absolute priority of the Territory Labor Government.

“Every life lost on Territory roads, has a massive impact on families, friends and the entire community.

“We are committed to continue to work towards zero lives lost on Territory roads and the release of this discussion paper is the next step in developing the 2024-2028 Road Safety Action Plan for the NT.”

Quotes to attribute to St John NT Director Ambulance Services Andrew Thomas:

“St John NT urges all drivers to take care on the roads. Please drive to the conditions, wear a seat belt, don’t be distracted and certainly don’t speed. Slowing down is the single most effective way to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on the road.

“Wearing your seatbelt can increase your chance of surviving a crash by up to 50%. The last thing our paramedics want is to arrive on the scene of an accident where another family has lost a loved one.

“St John NT fully supports the next iteration of the Towards Zero Road Safety Action Plan and encourages our community to get involved.”
