Territory Day Returns To Mindil Beach For 2024

NT Government

The Lawler Labor Government is returning Territory Day celebrations on 1 July 2024, to the iconic venue of Mindil Beach.

After listening to the community and clarifying advice provided to Northern Territory Major Event’s Company (NTMEC), the Chief Minister has decided this year’s Territory Day will remain at Mindil Beach.

Territory Day is a day of celebration for all Territorians – born and bred and newly arrived – to express their pride in the Territory and our incredible way of life.

The iconic Territory Day celebrations at Mindil Beach have been occurring for more than 20 years, and will continue to do so.

Many factor’s contributed to NT MEC moving the famous celebration of independence to the Waterfront, most prominently AAPA’s advice that a Cultural Authority certificate would be best practice to host a major event at Mindil Beach.

However, it has become clear that Mindil Beach remains the most popular option for hosting Territory Day celebrations and Territorians will continue to be able to celebrate our day in the best spot possible.

NTMEC will work to ensure an Authority Certificate is acquired for next year and every year after. NTMEC will work with AAPA to understand if any areas of significance needs to be cordoned off to minimise foot traffic.

Quotes attributed to Chief Minister Eva Lawler:

“We’ve heard Territorians loud and clear and Territory Day will remain at Mindil Beach.”

“This is an iconic event at an iconic location and we want to make sure everyone has the best Territory Day possible.”

“The plan to move Territory Day was the wrong one and we’ve listened to the community to fix it and keep the event at Mindil Beach.”

Quotes attributed to the Minister for Major Events, Brent Potter:

“Territorians deserve a celebration that is worthy of everything that is great about the Territory – that’s why we are making sure this event goes ahead at the iconic Mindil Beach.”

“We have spoken to NTMEC and AAPA and feel comfortable that we can manage the risks. We will go ahead at bringing a great positive event to mark Territory Day.”
