Textile artists’ Crows Nest Gallery exhibition speaks from the heart

Textile artists Elizabeth Schmidt and Diana Vogel have created expressions of joy in their new exhibition, It Speaks To My Heart, which is on display at the Crows Nest Gallery from March 6-28, 2024.

It Speaks To My Heart explores the artists’ personal connections to their subjects and celebrates what brings meaning and joy to their lives.

Through their respective practice, textile artists Elizabeth Schmidt and Diana Vogel explore modern interpretations of ancient arts in an age-old quest to express that which resonates with their hearts.

With deep roots in the Darling Downs region, their generational connections echo through their work as Elizabeth and Diana share moments which left lasting impressions, giving a glimpse into their lives and inviting discussion and reflection upon what is important: family, friends, the environment we live in and how we live in our world.

Today’s world may be vastly different, yet artisan skills our ancestors possessed and shared are just as relevant now as they were then.

The way we use them may have changed, yet the impact on our lives, particularly our sense of community and mental health, remains the same.

“I am an emerging textile artist who focuses on bringing artworks to life that bring joy to my soul,” Diana Vogel explains.

“I am inspired by nature in all her moods and glory and tend to ‘see beauty amongst the weeds’.”

“As an artist, I try to look at patterns in everyday things. I enjoy working in the colours of the Australian landscape and the changing seasons provide many opportunities to develop two and three-dimensional works of art,” Elizabeth Schmidt said.

“I love making books, dyeing fabric, painting paper and using my sewing skills to decorate and put things together.”

The exhibition’s artist talk is at 11am on Sunday, March 10. This is a free event and no bookings are required.
