Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating following the theft from a car and subsequent deceptions last month.
Investigators have been told a car was broken into and a wallet stolen in the Parkdale area on 28 August.
A bank card from the theft was used at various convenience stores in Mentone, Black Rock and Beaumaris the following day.
Police have released images of a man they believe can assist with their investigation.
The man is perceived be Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 40s, and is of average height and build.
