Applications are now open for budding and amateur photographers to enter the Seniors Card member’s 2019 Through the Lens photographic competition.
Evlynn Hayes, Manager of the South Australian Seniors Card program, said the annual competition and exhibition is a highlight of the Office for Ageing Well’s International Day of Older Persons celebrations.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for older South Australians to share their photography skills with the community,” Ms Hayes said.
“Last year the competition attracted almost 1,100 entries from across the state and it was exciting to see such a diverse range of subjects covered.
“The entries offer a glimpse into the varied and exciting lives of older South Australians, reflecting their interests, family lives and values.
“It proves again and again that age is no barrier to creative expression and I’m excited to see the calibre of entrants we receive this year.”
Amongst other prizes, the overall winner’s photo will feature on the cover of the 2020 Seniors Card Discount Directory.
David Munro, the Through the Lens 2018 competition winner, said it was a fun and challenging way to encourage seniors in South Australia to get out and be creative.
“There are so many facets to it, artistic and technical, and always something new to learn yourself and from seeing other people’s images,” Mr Munro said.
“I’ll definitely be entering again this year and would encourage everyone to have a go too.
“You never know what might catch the judge’s eye but for me though, a good photo is one that has a very strong and clear subject matter, with little or no distractions.”
The Through the Lens competition closes on Friday 9 August, with finalists chosen across five categories – landscape, seniors in action, nature, artistic photography and portrait.
Members of the public can also vote for their favourite in the People’s Choice Award.
The winners will be announced at the opening of the exhibition featuring shortlisted entries on Thursday 3 October at the City Library, Rundle Mall Adelaide.
