Timeline essential for budget infrastructure projects

  • Infrastructure investment welcome but timeline is essential
  • Liberals record for delivery inspires little confidence
  • JobKeeper and JobSeeker must be extended
  • Labor has welcomed an investment in Tasmanian infrastructure projects set to be handed down in Tuesday’s federal budget, but has warned a timeline is essential.

Labor Leader, Rebecca White, said it is critical that projects are delivered without delay, especially given the government’s reliance on infrastructure for its COVID recovery.

“The Liberals’ record of infrastructure mismanagement inspires little confidence they are capable of delivering key project targets, making the inclusion of strict timelines essential,” Ms White said.

“The Liberals may be good at listing infrastructure projects but they are yet to prove they are capable of delivering the type of large infrastructure projects that they are now hinging our state’s COVID recovery on.

“Michael Ferguson has been a repeat offender for being all talk and no action when it comes to infrastructure. Since the 2018 election the Liberals have failed to get more than $600 million of promised infrastructure out the door.

Ms White said Tasmania would benefit from the government needs to broaden its COVID recovery approach from infrastructure to stimulate job creation.

“There needs to be measures in the budget to help people keep their heads above water, specifically extending JobKeeper beyond March and making sure that JobSeeker doesn’t drop back to pre-COVID levels.”
