Tokyo technique to take over Townsville’s premier art gallery

Ninety artists from across the country and overseas are pushing the limits on a Japanese printmaking process in the new Perc Tucker Regional Gallery exhibition Risographomania.

The exhibition brings together the 16 local artists alongside national and international artists to explore risography, a form of printmaking invented by Riso Kagaku in 1980 as an alternative to screen printing and offset printing.

Townsville City Council Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said the exhibition was bright and exciting.

“This is an exhibition that will captivate visitors to the gallery. It’s very fun and colourful and its joyousness will leave you feeling lighter after seeing the works,” Cr Greaney said.

“Risography is known for creating little accidents during the process that can often enhance the planned work, and that’s clear in some of the pieces throughout Risographomania.

“As with our other exhibitions this year, Risographomania will have a virtual tour which members of the public can take for free online.”

Risographomania runs from 19 February to 10 April 2022 at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery. Entry is free.
