Treaties Committee to consider Czech Republic Extradition Treaty

The Joint Standing Committee on Treaties will hold a public hearing today into the Treaty on Extradition between Australia and the Czech Republic.

Committee Chair, Mr Josh Wilson MP said: “This Treaty will contribute to the law enforcement cooperation between Australia and the Czech Republic, a like-minded country with a mutual interest in responding to serious and organised crime.”

The Treaty provides a comprehensive framework for Australia and the Czech Republic to work together on extradition matters. This includes the surrender of an individual from one country to the other for criminal prosecution or to serve a prison sentence.

This Treaty will streamline cooperation between the two countries and is an important way to respond to transnational and serious crime threats, including illicit drugs, other illicit commodities, and cybercrime.

“This Treaty will ensure that people who have left Australia are not able to avoid justice for crimes that have been committed. Australia will also be better able to assist the Czech Republic by returning alleged criminals,” Mr Wilson said.
