From a 100-metre-long artwork woven by artists in Arnhem Land to robot dogs trained to paint, a world of contemporary art and design is coming to NGV this summer for the third NGV Triennial – backed by the Andrews Labor Government.
Minister for Creative Industries Steve Dimopoulos visited the NGV International today to unveil the star-studded line up of artists and designers that will feature in the massive free exhibition.
Opening on 3 December and running throughout summer, Triennial will take over all floors of NGV International on St Kilda Road, featuring works by 100 artists and designers from 30 countries including counterculture icon Yoko Ono, British artist David Shrigley and luxury fashion label Schiaparelli.
Showcasing painting, sculpture, robotics, fashion, multimedia, and interactive art installations, Triennial will showcase 75 works including more than 25 world-premiere projects which have been specially commissioned by NGV for the exhibition.
Visitors to the NGV will be greeted by a giant text-based work on the NGV façade by Yoko Ono, while inside they will have the opportunity to walk amongst Mun-dirra, a 100-metre-long woven fish fence produced over two years by 10 artists working in Arnhem Land.
A selection of work by iconic British artist Tracey Emin will include a five-metre-high neon light installation, while Polish artist Agnieszka Pilat will train Boston Dynamics robot dogs to paint autonomously, with audiences watching them create a durational work over four months.
The inaugural NGV Triennial, held in 2017, attracted more than 1.2 million visitors, including thousands of interstate and international tourists. The 2020 exhibition welcomed almost 550,000 visitors, including nearly 80,000 children and 12,000 students.
