36 Mornington Peninsula netball teams are sure to be scoring goals with the announcement of upgrades to Truemans Road Recreation Reserve in Capel Sound.

Mornington Peninsula Shire is preparing to upgrade the six existing netball courts currently utilised by more than 400 local players through the Nepean Netball Association.

Works will include new courts, fencing, updated coaching boxes and competition standard LED lighting to accommodate evening use of the courts.

Shire Mayor David Gill said the upgrades will provide much needed improvements to the facilities and increase opportunities for training and matches to be held at night.

“We’re upgrading Truemans Road Rec Reserve to increase participation in sport and recreation across the Peninsula and continue Council’s work to remove barriers to female participation.

“This project is part of the Shire’s Sports Capacity Plan, preparing local facilities to cater for the growing needs of our sporting community”, concluded Cr Gill.

Seawinds Ward Councillor Cr Antonella Celi said “Council has long advocated for this reserve to be improved and the new courts will ensure everyone has access to safe, high-quality facilities for years to come”.

Fellow Seawinds Ward Councillor Simon Brooks said “getting this reserve up to standard will contribute to Council’s plans to make the Peninsula a thriving place for community participation in sport and shape a healthy, happy, inclusive and active community”.

Seawinds Ward Councillor Frank Martin said the upgrades will “provide much needed infrastructure to maintain participation in junior girls’ netball across the Peninsula now and as it grows in the future”.

Work is due to commence in November 2019 with completion scheduled for April 2020.

This project is funded by Mornington Peninsula Shire’s capital works program ($820,000) and Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Female Friendly Facilities Program ($300,000).

The Shire recently completed upgrades at Truemans Road Reserve including:

  • New irrigation tank and system
  • Two senior competition standard soccer pitches
  • One senior cricket oval including synthetic pitch
  • Four lane synthetic grass multi-use cricket training facility
