Two charged during Operation Mammoth, NSW

Two men will face court following a police operation in Sydney’s south yesterday.

Operation Mammoth, a high-visibility policing strategy, was established to prevent and disrupt crime across St George, Hurstville, Rockdale and surrounding suburbs.

The operation, which ran between 12pm and 10pm yesterday (Thursday 16 May 2019), involved general duties officers from St George Police Area Command, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Police Transport Command, Youth and Crime Prevention Command, the Mounted Unit and Dog Unit.

Two men were arrested and charged during the operation.

A 41-year-old man was arrested and charged with breach AVO, resist arrest, state false name, and a railway offence after he was stopped by officers at Rockdale Railway Station.

A 36-year-old man was arrested at Sans Souci for possess prohibited drug, possess identity to commit indicatable offence, possess housebreaking implements, and custody of a knife.

Both men refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court today (Friday 17 May 2019).

Additionally, 66 people were searched during the operation and 22 move-on directions were issued.

Police conducted 32 business inspections, more than 560 stationary Random Breath Tests, and issued 37 traffic infringements.

Officers also conducted bail compliance checks and AVO compliance checks.

St George Police Area Command’s Detective Chief Inspector Craig James, said Operation Mammoth is just one strategy the Command has implemented to target and disrupt crime in the local area.

“Police will be prioritising public safety and targeting those who continue to put other people’s lives at risk, by engaging in anti-social behaviour, alcohol-related crime and other criminal activity,” Det Ch Insp James said.

“Our officers are committed to helping those in need and work around the clock to make the community a safer place.

“Locals should expect to see police at these locations again throughout the year, as more operations are planned,” Det Ch Insp James said.
