Two dead after crash, NSW

Two people have died following a two-car crash at Salamander Bay this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Port Stephens Drive and Salamander Way about 2pm today (Wednesday 26 August 2020), following reports two vehicles had collided.

It’s understood three people were trapped for a short time following the crash.

The male driver of one vehicle died at the scene, while the female passenger was due to be airlifted to John Hunter Hospital; however, she died shortly after. They are yet to be formally identified.

The male driver of the other vehicle has been taken to Tomaree Hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene has been established, with officers from the Crash Investigation Unit currently on scene.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash has been launched.

Traffic is slow in the area, with police expecting both roads to be impacted for some time.

Officers are urging drivers to avoid the area or to take an alternate route home.
