Two northern suburban public primary schools will merge from 2021 following overwhelming support from parents for one primary school in Westminster.
Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today announced Westminster Primary School and Westminster Junior Primary School would amalgamate and become a single school for students from kindergarten to Year 6.
Westminster Junior Primary School, which has 223 students from kindergarten to Year 3, and Westminster Primary School, which has 102 students from Years 4 to 6, are the only remaining schools of their type in Western Australia.
While the education support centre will remain a separate centre, staff and students will continue to work with the new inclusive amalgamated school and be part of the school community.
A new administration block will be built along with a car park upgrade and new signage for the school.
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
“The overwhelming feedback from the community consultation was in support of the amalgamation of Westminster Junior Primary School and Westminster Primary School. We have listened to that feedback and responded accordingly.
“An amalgamation implementation committee will now be established to consider matters such as the school name, uniforms, staff arrangements, resources and finances.
“I would like to thank everyone who participated in the community consultation process last year. It is important that everyone has a voice in the future of their local school, and even more important that students themselves were involved in the process.
“This is an exciting time for the school and community, and I look forward to watching the new primary school thrive from next year.”
As stated by Mirrabooka MLA Janine Freeman:
“The two schools have always worked well together for the benefit of students, and the merger will make the focus on students even stronger.
“Bringing the two schools together will bring certainty for parents and teachers but most importantly for the students who now have a seamless transition into their senior primary school years.”
