Two male youths from southern Tasmania, aged 14 and 16, have been charged in relation to an allege crime spree totalling $120,000.
The charges – following an extensive investigation by Kingston Criminal Investigation Branch – relate to burglary, stealing, unlawfully setting fire to property and dangerous driving offences committed in the greater Hobart area in between 17 February 2024 and 15 March 2024, including the theft of cars which were subsequently destroyed by fire on the Eastern shore.
Total value of property destroyed is estimated at $120,000.
The 14-year-old youth was charged with:
Dangerous Driving x 3
Aggravated Burglary (Dwelling) x 3
Burglary x 2
Motor Vehicle Stealing x 6
Stealing x 6
Unlawful setting fire to property x 5
The 16-year-old youth was charged with:
Aggravated burglary (Dwelling) x 3
Burglary x 2
Unlawful setting fire to property x 5
Motor Vehicle Stealing x 5
The youths will appear in the Hobart Youth Justice Court at a later date.
“Tasmania Police is committed to protecting the community and local businesses and detecting and preventing anti-social and criminal behaviour with the aim of making our public spaces safer for everyone,” said Detective Inspector David Gill said.
“Our community deserves to feel safe at home, out in public and in their workplaces.
“We will continue to target anti-social and criminal behaviour and where appropriate, necessary and authorised by law, we will be charging those who offend, and putting them before a Magistrate.”
