Institution ranks 30th in Young University Rankings

UOW rated among the world’s best young universities

The University of Wollongong (UOW) has been ranked 30th in the world and third in Australia in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings announced Monday 3 July 2023.

The Young University Rankings assesses institutions globally that are less than 50 years old and evaluates them based on various criteria, including teaching, research output, industry engagement, international outlook, and academic reputation. More than 600 universities worldwide were included in the 2023 rankings, making UOW’s achievement even more commendable.

UOW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Patricia M. Davidson expressed her delight at the result, which follows strong performances in the recent THE Impact Rankings, QS World University Rankings, QS Star Ratings and QILT Student Experience Survey.

“Our achievements in these rankings are testament to the collective efforts of our staff and a University-wide commitment to making a positive impact on the world and the communities we operate in through transformative education and world-class research,” Professor Davidson said.

“This result is built on a commitment to providing a world-class education, fostering an environment conducive to ground-breaking research and development, collaborating with industry to translate innovative thinking into real-world outcomes, and a genuinely global outlook.”

The Universities results in the 2023 THE Young University Rankings came through strong performances across a broad range of subject areas, including its traditional strengths in physical sciences (geology, environmental, earth and marine sciences and physics and chemistry), engineering and technology (including civil engineering, mechanical engineering), law and education.

In individual subject areas, UOW was ranked 4th in archaeology, 7th in geography, 10th in architecture, 10th in sport science, 14th in psychology, 16th in civil engineering, 17th in law and 18th in education.

In other recent world university ranking results, UOW achieved its best ever ranking of 162 in the QS World University Rankings; earned a QS 5+ Star Rating for its offerings to students; performed strongly in the QILT 2022 Student Experience Survey where it ranked second among NSW public universities; and ranked 61st globally in the THE Impact Rankings, which are based on universities results in working towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
