Update 1: Search and Rescue, Creal Reef in the Coral Sea off Mackay

The search and rescue operation for a fisherman missing in waters near the Creal Reef in the Coral Sea off Mackay has concluded its third day, following the rescue of two of the man’s companions on Friday April 14.

Police and Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) conducted an extensive and targeted search of around 100 square nautical miles of waters nearby points of interest, including where the recued men, their vessel, EPIRB and eskies were found, without result.

The surface search party of five vessels, including the Queensland Police Service’s ‘Damian Leeding’ catamaran was assisted by aerial support of a Townsville-based QG Air helicopter, which surveyed outlying reefs at low tide.

Concentrated efforts took into account tidal patterns, with favourable conditions experienced throughout the day, which may begin to deteriorate overnight.

QPS vessel Damian Leeding will remain at sea overnight and will recommence search activity at first light.

Police continue to hold grave fears for the welfare of the missing 41-year-old Grasstree Beach man.

Boaties and other recreational water users are asked to immediately report sightings to police.

The trio activated an EPIRB aboard a stricken vessel just after 8.10pm on Thursday April 13, with an emergency response coordinated by police, VMR, AMSA Response Centre and a rescue helicopter.
