Update: Kallista Community House

Yarra Ranges Shire Council

In the interests of public safety, Yarra Ranges Council must soon remove a Red Oak tree next to the Kallista Community House, following a rapid decline in its health.

Lyster Ward Councillor, Peter Mcilwain, said that Council staff recently met on site with several community members, who acknowledged that despite efforts over recent years to save the tree, its condition has deteriorated and it needs to be removed before it poses a safety risk to the public.

“The community members are looking forward to these works being completed, and shared their thoughts on the preferred species and location for a replacement tree.

The Kallista Community House building will remain closed, with Council considering the long-term future for the site. The requirement to remove the tree does not relate to any decision on the future of the Community House.

In 2022, the Kallista Community House Committee of Management decided to cease operations and the State Government subsequently confirmed it would not provide further funding for a community house in the town.

Cr Mcilwain, said that Council recognised the need for a long-term plan for the area.

“The community house building has been closed since 2022, and must remain closed as it has been deemed unsafe for use,” Cr Mcilwain said.

“Given the significant cost involved and the low level of use prior to its closure, at this stage, Council is unfortunately not in a position to undertake the significant works required to repair and reopen the building. However we understand there is community interest in the long-term future of the site.

“This week I have met with with the Kallista Village Township Group to give them an update on the issue and hear directly from the community about the area.

“Council’s next step is to develop a broader strategic plan for Kallista to consider the town’s future needs and how these can delivered.

“I’d like to thank the Kallista community for their patience, understanding and cooperation on this issue.”

The works to remove and replace the tree will commence next week.
