The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP, previously Department of Transport DoT) has funded approximately 38 kilometres of pop-up bike lanes in our City. During installation and trial of the bike lanes, we received correspondence and phone calls from the community identifying concerns about safety, amenity and aesthetic impacts.
In response to this feedback, Council requested alterations and removals of some pop-up bike lane infrastructure following a Council meeting on 20 July 2022 and then requested further reviews of the trial following a meeting on 7 September 2022. At a meeting on 8 December 2022, Council resolved to request the immediate removal of pop-up bike lane infrastructure in several locations across our City.
DTP provided a formal response on 6 April 2023, informing us that pop-up bike routes will be removed or adjusted across Port Phillip. Council is seeking further clarification from DTP regarding its plans for permanent pop-up bike lane infrastructure on Marine Parade, a state-managed road, as we want to ensure the community is properly engaged on this development.
DTP has informed us that reinstatement works will commence in the coming weeks and we are working with DTP to ensure the best outcome for our community.
We acknowledge and thank the DTP for its efforts to date in working collaboratively with Council to implement our resolutions, which seek to address community concerns regarding pop-up bike lane infrastructure in our City.
