[UPDATE] Police shooting at Tea Tree Road at Brighton

A Tasmania Police Professional Standards investigation is underway after a 38-year-old man from Brighton died in a shooting incident involving police last night.

Three police officers were called to a residence at Tea Tree Road, Brighton following reports an armed man was threatening the occupants.

“Upon arrival police observed smoke coming from the house. As they entered the driveway the man drove at the officers in a dark-coloured sedan, colliding with the police vehicle,” said Deputy Commissioner Scott Tilyard.

“The man then reversed and drove towards the officers, who had left their vehicle, and were on foot.”

“Two police officers discharged their firearms towards the vehicle, as it was driven towards them. One of those officers was corralled against a fence at the time.”

“As a result, the man received injuries to his head and shoulder and Ambulance Tasmania attended within minutes. The man died at the scene a short time later.”

“None of the police officers were physically injured.”

“This is a traumatic incident for everyone involved. The man’s family, those present, and all emergency services workers involved are being provided with counselling and support.”

“The Professional Standards investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.”
