Updated Cross Border Travel Direction, South Australia

The Emergency Management (Cross Border Travel – Associated Direction No 39) (COVID-19) Direction 2021 has been revoked and replaced by the Emergency Management (Cross Border Travel – Associated Direction No 40) (COVID-19) Direction 2021. This Direction came into effect at 12:16pm on Saturday 14 August 2021.

Key changes include:

Effective as of 12:16pm on Saturday 14 August 2021:

The New South Wales Cross Border corridor is revoked, and therefore travellers New South Wales Cross Border corridor are prohibited from entering South Australia with the exception of Essential Travellers,and people escaping domestic violence.

Essential Travellers will be subject to Level 4 requirements:

  • COVID-19 test on day 1, 5, & 13.
  • Self-quarantine for 14 days (from the day of arrival).
  • Must wear a face mask (covering mouth and nose) at any time that they come into contact with the public for a period of 14 days after their arrival in South Australia.

People escaping domestic violence will be subject to Level 5 requirements:

  • COVID-19 test on day 1, 5, & 13.
  • Quarantine for 14 days (not counting the day of arrival) at a place approved by an authorised officer.
  • Must wear a face mask (covering mouth and nose) at any time that they come into contact with the public for a period of 14 days after their arrival in South Australia.

Supervised home quarantine

Supervised home quarantine is being introduced for travellers who have been granted an exemption by an authorised officer in SA Health to travel to South Australia. They must complete supervised quarantine at a place other than a medi-hotel or quarantine facility. They are required to:

  • COVID-19 test on day 1, 5, and 13.
  • Quarantine for 14 days as directed
  • Must wear a face mask (covering mouth and nose) at any time that they come into contact with the public for a period of 14 days after their arrival in South Australia.

People who are in supervised home quarantine must display a sign at the entrance of the place to warn visitors that it is a place of quarantine.

Exemptions for travellers from Queensland and Victoria

Travellers (other than Essential travellers and permitted arrivals) from Queensland and Victoria may apply for an exemption from SA Health which may approve travel to South Australia. Applications should be made through the Health Exemptions page.

Applications for Cross Border Travel Registration without SA Health approval will automatically result in a declined application.

Modifications to Essential travellers categories

For Remote or isolated workers—restricted zone residents and Specialist workers in essential sectors, a Cross Border Travel Registration must be made for each entry into South Australia, or for a period (during which multiple entries may occur) lasting no longer than 30 days.

These workers must attach a declaration, to their Cross Border Travel application declaring the risk mitigation plan complies with guidelines made by the Chief Public Health Officer on the SA Health website and the necessity of their travel into SA. The declaration can be made by:

  • the employer or operator; or
  • the labour hire provider; or
  • an industry representative organisation; or
  • the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) or the Department for Energy and Mining.
