Updated health alert as smoke haze to continue

NSW Health is renewing itscall for people to take precautions as smoke from hazard reduction burns isexpected to continue to impact air quality across Sydney into Thursday (23 May).

NSW Health Director ofEnvironmental Health Dr Richard Broome again reminds people to take precautionsas smoke can irritate the respiratory system and aggravate existing lung andheart conditions.

“People with conditionslike asthma, emphysema and angina are more likely to be sensitive to theeffects of smoke,” said Dr Broome.

“Smoke from hazardreduction burns can be quite unpredictable, but we’re expecting poor airquality in a number of places across the Sydney basin into Thursday morning.

“For most people, smokewill be no more than an irritation.

“However, I recommend thatpeople with existing heart and lung conditions should avoid outdoor physicalactivity when there’s smoke around.

“It’s also important forpeople with asthma to follow their Asthma Action Plan and have their relievingmedication with them.”
