Updated Local Law adopted

Wyndham City has an updated Community Amenity Local Law following its adoption at this week’s Council Meeting.

The Community Amenity Local Law 2023 is a simplified and updated document, with notable additions around:

  • Nature Strip Maintenance
  • Shopping trolleys
  • Short stay accommodation and
  • Anti-hoon clause updates.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Susan McIntyre, welcomed the update that included changes such as a clause to keep nature strips presentable, as well as a further clause against altering nature strips, except in accordance with Council’s Nature Strip Beautification Policy.

“Those occupying a property that adjoin a nature strip must maintain the grass on the nature strip to a height of less than 30 centimetres – this will help to improve the amenity of our city and ensure that overgrown grass and weeds do not pose a hazard to pedestrians or drivers,” Cr McIntyre said.

“We also strengthened the existing local law regarding abandoned shopping trolleys to ensure retailers take more responsibility to prevent trolleys being taken off site and abandoned in streets and open spaces.”

Additionally, clauses were added to reference short stay accommodation and hooning.

“Owners who use their houses for short-stay accommodation will be required to hold a permit from Council, which will place further obligations around noise, parking, and waste issues from these properties.”

“Anti-Hoon clauses have been included in the Local Law, which gives Victoria Police power to take action against crowds of people that spectate at illegal hoon events.”

“The Community Amenity Local Law is an important document that shapes our City and I thank everyone who took the time to contribute to consultation.”

“Our Local Law protects everyone who lives, works and visits in the area – ensuring we’re looking after public health and safety and how our City looks and feels – enabling us to enjoy where we live and encouraging visitors to make our City a destination of choice.”

“We know how important presentation of our City is to our residents, business and visitors.”

The Community Amenity Local Law comes into effect on 22 September 2023 and Council will give residents time to become aware of the new requirements before introducing compliance measures.
