Upgrades underway to Tasmanian inland fishing amenities ahead of world championships

Guy Barnett,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

Tasmania is soon to be on show to the rest of the world, when the World Fly Fishing Championships begin in December 2019.

To reflect Tasmania’s international reputation, the Hodgman Liberal Government is investing $300,000 to upgrade and build new amenities and toilets at 10 fly fishing locations around the state.

Not only will those partaking in the Championships benefit from these upgrades to essential services, but the improvements are expected to be in place for all anglers before the opening of the 2019-2020 brown trout season in August this year.

The Government is committed to supporting our world class trout fishery which attracts more than 26,000 licensed anglers annually, including more than 5,000 interstate and overseas anglers.

We are also committed to reducing the cost of living and encouraging more people to go fishing, because Tasmania enjoys some of the best trout fishing in the world. We have also delivered on our commitment to freeze inland trout licence fees for four years.

The Inland Fisheries Service is commencing construction of amenities at boat ramps and campgrounds across the State including at:

* Bradys Lake, main boat ramp.

* Bronte Lagoon, boat ramp

* Four Springs Lake, southern end of the car park.

* Lake Augusta, boat ramp.

* Lake Sorell, Dago Point campground.

* Little Pine Lagoon, main boat ramp.

* Penstock Lagoon, boat ramp and the Ladies Walk area.

* Tungatinah Lagoon, boat ramp and

* Woods Lake, boat ramp.

Teams from up to 30 countries will compete, bringing an estimated 800 anglers and support crew to the state. It is the first time Tasmania has hosted the World Fly Fishing championships since 1988. The Hodgman Liberal Government is also supporting the event with a $100,000 grant. Tasmania has a world class trout fishery and we want to support and promote it.
