The University of the Sunshine Coast is partnering with Queensland Ballet (QB) to bring dance workshops for teenagers to Moreton Bay in mid-December.
A QB Teen Unite Immersion in Moreton Bay event will be held at USC’s Moreton Bay campus at Petrie from 14-16 December to enable creative local teenagers aged 13-17 of all skill levels to benefit from the expertise of Queensland Ballet instructors and USC academics.
This tailored experience will include ballet, hip-hop and contemporary dance workshops as well as presentations about entrepreneurship, mentorship and wellbeing.
As part of the program, USC Lecturer in Creative Industries Dr Karen Hands will present a brain booster workshop to give dancers strategies for training their brains to think outside of the box to inspire new ideas.
And USC Lecturer in Design Deborah Fisher will deliver a performance design workshop to highlight how important costume design, make-up (stage and screen) and set design are to creating a ballet.
The program will culminate in the filming of dance routines to produce 360-degree videos and an informal showcase where participants can demonstrate their new skills to friends and family.
Three-day passes for the QB Teen Unite Immersion in Moreton Bay are $150. One-day casual passes (for days one and two only) are available for $65 a day.
Queensland Ballet’s Head of Community Engagement Genevieve Dunn said the company was delighted to bring its newest youth program to Moreton Bay.
“QB Teen has been specifically designed to provide creative teens with access to highly skilled professionals in the creative arts industries where they can connect with like-minded teens and develop their skills and confidence as they prepare for their next move.”
Head of USC Moreton Bay Professor Karen Becker said the University was thrilled to partner with Queensland Ballet.
“We have a shared commitment to helping young people collaborate and realise their creative potential, and through this program we want to foster and promote the arts more broadly,” Professor Becker said.
“The program isn’t just about dance. It draws in a range of topics around wellbeing as well as also sharing some of the knowledge of our Creative Industries academics through the creative thinking and design workshops.”
USC’s Moreton Bay campus is located at 1 Moreton Parade, Petrie, and is adjacent Petrie railway station.
