UWA supports Walk Free report that advocates to end modern slavery

The University of Western Australia has commended Walk Free on its new report, Stacked Odds, released today, that advocates to end modern slavery.

The report estimates that one in 130 women and girls are living in modern slavery, and highlights the importance of investing time and resources to address the issues.

UWA aspires to educate our students to be globally relevant and responsible leaders, who will help build just and equitable societies. Therefore, we applaud the Minderoo Foundation’s Walk Free initiative and report, which seeks to end modern slavery.

Stacked Odds examines the disproportional impact of modern slavery practices on women and girls and speaks to the need for governments to lead legislative, cultural and economic change to end practices that prevent women and girls from full and free participation in society.

UWA commends Walk Free on its report, endorses its goals, and recommits its research and engagement capabilities towards efforts to free women and girls trapped by modern slavery practices.

UWA has a Modern Slavery Research Cluster brings that together interdisciplinary researchers and students from across UWA and partners to contribute to tackling modern slavery.

The cluster analyses and contributes to theoretical, historical and contemporary applied frameworks for understanding and tackling modern slavery.
