Vaccination mandate needed for childcare before border reopening

Tasmanian Labor

The Liberal Government must act swiftly to implement a COVID vaccination mandate for childcare workers to give clarity to the sector, increased safety to children and confidence to parents.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said Tasmania was now the only state without a childcare vaccine mandate for workers in the early childhood education sector.

“Children under the age of five cannot be vaccinated so we must do everything possible to make sure we protect them from exposure to the COVID virus,” Ms White said.

“Tasmania is the only state now without a mandate for childcare workers.

“Public Health advice has guided the decision to introduce mandates in other states and that decision making should be no different in Tasmania.

“It’s not good enough for the Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff to fob off concerns – as he has today.

“The safety of our children and babies is far too important for the government to side-step this important issue.

“The consequences of the virus entering the childcare sector are stark and there is the potential for COVID to spread rapidly and, as a parent – like thousands of others – I urge the government to make the call for Tasmania today.”
