Vaccine Operations Centre – Weekly Operational Update 14 June

Department of Health

A total of 5,867,299 vaccinations have been administered at more than 5,500 sites across the country. As of today, 9,179,790 vaccine doses have been delivered to these sites by the Australian Government.

This week, 790,886 doses were administered. Daily reports of vaccines administered continue to increase, with a new largest daily increase of 153,338 recorded on 10 June.

We have continued to provide support to Victoria through the supply of additional vaccines to Commonwealth and State clinics, even while the state faced other pressures with power outages and roads cut off due to snow, flooding and downed trees. This has ensured that vaccination centres and general practices have been supported during this difficult time, with minimal impact to deliveries.

The Vaccine Operations Centre has also swung into action to provide additional support to Queensland where 41,000 additional vaccine doses have been delivered to support Commonwealth and State vaccination centres on the Sunshine Coast.

This additional support has reinforced our mission of ensuring the vaccines we have are available across the county, when and where they are most needed, to protect more Australians.

This week, we reached a significant milestone – every aged care facility in Australia has had a first dose visit, which is a critical first step in protecting our most vulnerable Australians. We are now focussed on completing second dose visits, as well as delivering roving clinics to offer vaccines to those who may have chosen to receive a vaccination during the first visit.

We also implemented the direction from National Cabinet, with additional cohorts now eligible for vaccination. This included updating the eligibility checker on the Department of Health website on Tuesday 8 June, so that people aged 40 to 49 can now book their vaccination appointment.

Supplying and producing the vaccine

Last week, 811,980 doses of Pfizer and 232,800 doses of AstraZeneca were released for distribution.

Over the coming days, the Therapeutic Goods Administration will conduct sample testing of 298,350 doses of Pfizer vaccine which arrived in Australia last night, along with approximately 720,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine produced onshore by CSL, prior to releasing the vaccines for distribution.

Distributing the vaccine

Last week was our largest week. With support from our Distribution Partners DHL and Linfox, more than 1,118,000 vaccine doses were delivered across Australia to metropolitan, rural and remote locations, along with 2210 deliveries of consumables.

  • Additional doses for Queensland. This week and next week, Queensland will receive an additional 41,900 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine. This includes 20,000 doses to State Hubs, along with 21,900 to General Practices, by doubling the orders of approximately 75 sites in the Sunshine Coast area.
  • Additional doses for Victoria. Victoria continued to receive additional AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccine this week. This included an increase of AstraZeneca from 26,100 to 41,100 per week (for a total of 6 weeks) for state hubs, and a doubling of AstraZeneca for all Victorian General Practices. In addition, the first increase of Pfizer was also delivered, with more than 100,000 doses of Pfizer delivered to State hubs.
  • Ordering and Delivery. 99.8% of vaccine orders were completed last week with one order from QLD and two orders from NSW to be finalised tomorrow, following the national public holiday.
  • Australia’s assistance to the Pacific. This week another 20,000 doses were made available for distribution to the Pacific, with more than 308,000 doses now provided to DFAT. This will help our friends across the Pacific, including Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu.

Administering the vaccine

This week, 790,886 doses were administered across the country, taking the total number of doses administered to 5,867,299.

An analysis of the data shows another weekday average increase of 2,700 doses per day compared to the previous week, now 139,000 per weekday. 44% of those aged 50 and over, as well as 61% of those aged 70 and over have now received at least one dose of vaccine.

In addition:

  • Total sites. This week, an additional 315 general practices have been on-boarded to support the program, and will be administering AstraZeneca during the week of 21 June. We have a total of 4,397 general practices, 136 Commonwealth Vaccination Clinics (CVCs – formerly GPRCs) and 158 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services currently delivering vaccines, along with 770 state and territory sites, taking the total number of vaccination sites across the country to 5,510.
  • Aged Care. With our vaccine workforce service providers, we continue to focus on those most at risk in our residential aged care facilities, and have now completed first dose visits to all 2,566 facilities (100%) and 2413 second dose visits (94%). We are also conducting roving clinics, particularly in NSW and QLD, to facilities that have already received a first dose visit, to offer vaccinations to those who may not have chosen to receive a vaccination during the first visit.
  • Disability. We continue to ramp up our visits to disability residents with complex needs who require in-reach services, with 256 visits conducted last week. More than 8,000 people with a disability in a residential setting have received at least one dose.
