Victorians being slugged highest taxes in Australia

Victorians are paying more per person in tax than any other state in Australia.

New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has revealed the Andrews Government and councils collected an extra $7.3bn in land tax, stamp duty, rates and other charges in the last financial year alone.

In 2021-22, Victorians paid an average of $5638 to both levels of government, compared to $5537 in New South Wales.

The total amount pocketed by the Victorian and local governments was $36.9 billion, up from $29.6 billion the year before – a 25 per cent increase.

The ABS figures reveal land tax revenue rose from $3.2 billion to $4.1 billion while a booming property market helped push the total stamp duty take to $10.72 billion as young Victorians struggled to enter the market.

Shadow Treasurer Brad Rowswell said: “These figures confirm that Victorians are paying more tax than they ever have before and are getting less for it.

“And it’s only going to get worse for Victorians when the Andrews Government hands down what promises to be a horror State Budget next month.

“By the Andrews Government’s own numbers, their tax take will rise by 14 per cent over the next three years with the land tax take set to increase by 21 per cent over the same time.

“Indeed, total state taxes are forecast to rise to $35.6bn by 2025-26 from $18.3bn in 2014, representing a staggering 94 per cent increase.

“For example, Victorians are paying more for car rego and yet there are roads around our state that remain a death trap.

“Victorians were promised lower power bills, but will be paying 30 per cent more by the end of the year just to keep the lights on.

“And young Victorians continue to struggle to enter the property market thanks to some of the highest stamp duty rates in the nation under the Andrews Government.

“All this comes as Victoria is mired in soaring debt, compromising the delivery of vital services and major projects because of the economic incompetence of the Andrews Government.

“For as long as the Andrews Government is in power, every Victorian will continue to pay more and get less because it simply can’t manage money.”
