WA Recovery Plan progresses with architect appointed for Northam TAFE upgrade

  • T&Z appointed to design Northam TAFE campus upgrade
  • $2 million trades workshop refurbishment is expected to start in October 2021
  • Upgrade is part of largest TAFE capital works program in WA history, creating an estimated more than 1,000 jobs
  • Campus upgrades will deliver more training opportunities for local secondary students
  • Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery has announced that Western Australian architectural firm T&Z will design a $2 million upgrade to Central Regional TAFE’s Northam campus workshop.

T&Z is highly experienced in educational architecture having recently co-designed Stage 1 of Bob Hawke College in inner-city Perth and the new social and educational hub at North Metropolitan TAFE’s Perth campus.

Current facilities at Northam, which include light automotive, metals and construction workshops, will be replaced.

The new workshop refurbishment will include the installation of cutting-edge technology and equipment to meet the training needs of local industry in the building and construction, metal fabrication, automotive and engineering fields.

The upgraded facilities will be integral to the region’s vocational education and training Delivered to Secondary Students programs, offering pathways into apprenticeships such as agricultural machinery technology and heavy commercial fitting.

The Northam campus upgrades were announced in July as part of the WA Recovery Plan.

A record $167.4 million will be invested to fund upgrades to essential infrastructure across Western Australia’s TAFE colleges.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“We look forward to progressing plans for a state-of-the-art workshop at TAFE’s Northam campus.

“The McGowan Government is creating world-class learning opportunities for students while generating a pipeline of jobs, which will help the WA economy get back on track.”

As stated by Agricultural Region MLC Darren West:

“I am proud to be part of the McGowan Government that is investing in TAFE and training in the Agricultural Region.

“This project will ensure students in the Northam area have the opportunity to gain skills that will keep them employed in our region for years to come.”
