Visitors to Walgun Cape Byron State Conservation Area will soon enjoy further improvements with works set to commence on Stage 2 of the Cape Byron walking track rebuild between Wategos Beach and the Cape Byron Lighthouse.
The works include upgrading and widening a 210 m long section of the existing walking track from the Little Wategos Beach junction to the Most Easterly Point Lookout, the construction of a new viewing area and an improved step layout for ease of walking. The upgraded track will improve the park visitor experience and safety and promote the protection of the adjacent environment. The upgraded track will be predominantly constructed within the footprint of the existing track and disturbed edges where park visitors have deviated from the existing track and some erosion has occurred.
During construction, the track from Wategos Beach leading to the lighthouse will be closed to the public.
The work is one of the priority recommendations in the Cape Byron Master Plan. It aims to provide a world class walking experience for visitors to Walgun Cape Byron State Conservation Area and is proudly supported by Cape Byron Trust.
The Cape Byron walking track receives than more than 1.5 million park visitors annually with numbers increasing. Works are expected to be completed by July 2024.
