Walking For Mum: Harrison’s 28km Tribute

Cancer Council NSW

When Harrison walked 7 Bridges in October, every step was in memory of his loving mum, who died from bowel cancer in 2025.

“I’m doing the 7 Bridges Walk with my dad, which is a 28km walk. I’m hoping to raise $1,000. My mum did the walk twice, and I want to do it for the first time this year,” he said.

What began as a goal to raise $1,000 quickly grew into something much bigger. With support from family, friends and the wider community, Harrison raised over $11,000, more than 10 times his original target.

The 7 Bridges Walk is one of Cancer Council’s signature community fundraising events. This year’s sold-out event drew 15,000 participants through the streets of Sydney, aiming to raise more than $3 million to support Cancer Council’s cancer research, prevention programs, and support services.

The course involves walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Pyrmont Bridge, Anzac Bridge, Iron Cove Bridge, Gladesville Bridge, Tarban Creek Bridge and Fig Tree Bridge. Along the way, walkers can stop at six pop-up villages offering water, food trucks and live music.

“I’m excited about hanging out with my dad and seeing the beautiful scenery. I will keep on pushing myself and never give up, just like my mum,” said Harrison.

“I got to name the Iron Cove Bridge ‘Mum’s Bridge’ because anyone who is walking for their mum can relate.”

Together with his dad, Nicholas, Harrison completed 7 Bridges to raise money and awareness to help tackle cancer.

“Hopefully we can find a cure for cancer and save amazing people like my mum,” he said.

7News anchor and 7 Bridges ambassador Angela Cox says the walk also holds a special place in her heart.

“I love this day. My mum passed from cancer shortly before the first one and so I just like doing something. I like being proactive, and I feel like everyone who comes here is the same,” she said.

“Whether they’re battling it themselves, looking after a loved one, or they’ve lost someone, we’re all out there trying to make a difference just with our steps.”

Angela was joined by her 7News co-star Mark Ferguson. This year was Mark’s 15th year as ambassador for 7 Bridges.

He said: “It’s a fabulous day. It’s a really community-based day. It’s wonderful to see so many people getting together. One step at a time. Raising $1 at a time… over 15,000 people. Over $3 million will be raised, so it’s a big day. Slowly but surely, we’re getting on top of it,” said Mark.
