National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) in conjunction with NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) is undertaking a hazard reduction burn for Wianamatta Nature Reserve, near Cranebrook Thursday 18 August.
NPWS Area Manager Katie Littlejohn said the 19 hectares burn in Wianamatta Nature Reserve is occurring in August to take advantage of suitable weather.
“This burn will help protect the communities surrounding the Nature Reserve and Cranebrook and reduce the risk of wildfire to surrounding properties,” Ms Littlejohn said.
“The burn is due to begin at about 10 am and motorists along Northern Road, Vincent Road and Cranebrook Rd in Cranebrook are reminded to beware of potential smoke hazard and drive to conditions,” Ms Littlejohn said.
Public access to the Nature Reserve including all walk tracks will be closed during the burning operations.
Smoke from the burn program may be visible in the Nature Reserve and may also be evident in local communities depending on wind direction.
People with asthma or those who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors.
This burn is one of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across New South Wales each year, many with the assistance of the NSW RFS, and Fire & Rescue NSW.
