Williamson pushes for better XPT timetable between Sydney and Brisbane

NSW Nationals

State Nationals Member for Clarence, Richie Williamson, has used the floor of the NSW Parliament to call for improved XPT rail services between Sydney and Brisbane.

Mr Williamson has moved a motion aimed at delivering a more practical timetable for regional travellers, including those in the Richmond and Clarence Valleys.

Mr Williamson has called on the Minns Labor Government to increase investment in regional rail services, including the provision of additional XPT sleeper cars for long-distance travel, and to review current timetables to allow the XPT to arrive in and depart from Brisbane at times that better meet the needs of passengers.

Mr Williamson said the current timetable sees the XPT service from Sydney arrive in Brisbane at 4.52am, which is far from ideal for travellers.

“Now is the perfect opportunity for the NSW Government to review the timetable in line with feedback received through the Regional Integrated Transport Plan,” Mr Williamson said.

“A better arrival and departure time for services between Sydney and Brisbane is achievable and would greatly benefit both passengers and XPT staff. It would also allow travellers to better plan day trips for medical appointments, business commitments, and onward travel.”

Mr Williamson said residents across the Richmond and Clarence Valleys highly value the XPT service and timetable improvements could encourage more people to use rail travel.

“Many residents rely on the XPT as an affordable and reliable transport option. Improving the timetable would undoubtedly boost passenger numbers, particularly at a time when fuel prices remain high,” he said.

“This is an important issue for the travelling public and one that deserves serious consideration. Better regional rail services mean better outcomes for regional communities.”
