WOMAD 2021, South Australia

WOMADelaide will kick off in beautiful King Rodney Park (between Bartels Road & Wakefield Road) tonight with the first of four sunset concerts. The event is operating under a COVID Management Plan and will be different to how it has been delivered in previous years. South Australian authorities are urging revellers to enjoy the event but to exercise care, look after their personal belongs, and to be patient in the coming weeks, as other events throughout the City draw thousands of diverse visitors to the CBD.

Police Commander for WOMAD, Superintendent Matt Nairn said that WOMAD usually draws in crowds in the thousands and brings in people of all different ages and abilities.

“Looking out for each other and oneself is vital, particularly given the current climate with COVID-19 and the changes that the organisers have made to bring this event to Adelaide that so many have come to love,” said Superintendent Nairn.

“We are keen for people to celebrate safely and to ensure that they are following a few safety tips and importantly following the COVID-19 safe practices”, he said.

The Department for Health and Wellbeing’s Deputy Chief Public Health Officer, Dr Emily Kirkpatrick, said maintaining COVID-safe practices will help stop the spread.

“We have been working closely with organisers, to put measures in place to ensure everyone can enjoy the festival, while still staying as safe as possible,” Dr Kirkpatrick said.

“There will be COVID Safe Check-In points leading up to the entry gates to make it as easy as possible for patrons to check-in, and audiences will have allocated seating to allow for physical distancing.

“We ask everyone to wash your hands regularly, maintain 1.5 metres from others, stay home if you are feeling unwell and follow the instructions of the COVID-19 Marshals who are there to make sure the events are in-line with the approved COVID Management Plan.”

Those heading to WOMAD should familiarise themselves with the event organiser’s website which contains specific information about how WOMAD is being delivered differently this year. SAPOL is calling on event patrons to remember the following to:

  • Do not leave bags unattended, even if only to walk a short distance to get food or beverages.
  • Plan your transport ahead if you plan on drinking. Organise a ride share, public transport or car pool with a mate.
  • For those driving to and from the event, be patient and allow extra time to navigate road closures and possible delays.
  • Look out for your friends and family.
  • Report any suspicious behaviour immediately on the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or in an emergency please call Triple Zero.
  • Before leaving the house, check WOMAD’s website regarding any changes at the event as well as the SA Health website for any updates regarding COVID-19.

Those attending the 4 night festival can expect to see Police present in and around King Rodney Park to help ensure public safety and to preserve the inclusive, family-friendly atmosphere of the event.
