Woman bitten in suspected shark attack at Port Macquarie, NSW

A woman will undergo surgery after being bitten on the leg on the state’s Mid North Coast this morning.

About 10am (Saturday 15 August 2020), emergency services were called to Shelly Beach on Pacific Drive, Port Macquarie, following reports of a shark attack.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a 35-year-old woman at the scene for leg injuries before transferring her to Port Macquarie Hospital in a stable condition. She was later airlifted to Newcastle Hospital where she will undergo surgery.

Police were told the woman and a man were surfing when she was bitten on the right calf then the back of her thigh. Her companion was forced to punch the fish until it let go.

Beaches in the area will be closed for the next 24 hours.

Officers attached to Mid North Coast Police District are working with NSW Fisheries to identify the species.
