Woman shot during domestic violence incident at Lake Illawarra, NSW

A man has been charged after he allegedly fired a firearm during a domestic altercation in the Illawarra region.

About 7.25pm yesterday (Thursday 28 May 2020), emergency services were called to a home on Grattan Street, Cringila, following reports of a domestic-related incident.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended and found a 48-year-old woman with wounds to her face, arms, chest and back. Police will allege a man, known to the woman, shot her with a gel blaster before striking her in the back of the head with the gun. The man fled the scene prior to their arrival.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Wollongong Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

A crime scene was established, and detectives commenced inquiries into the incident.

Following inquiries, a 47-year-old man was arrested today (Friday 29 May 2020) in Cringila and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station. He was charged with:

  • Reckless wounding (DV),
  • Possess unauthorised pistol (x2),
  • Use unauthorised prohibited firearm, and
  • Possess unauthorised prohibited firearm

He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 29 May 2020).
