Wonthaggi Life Saving Club Update

A Project Steering group has formed to lead the delivery of temporary facilities for Wonthaggi Life Saving Club (LSC). These temporary facilities will ensure lifesaving services can be provided at the popular Cape Paterson Bay Beach over the upcoming Summer patrol season.

A severe and isolated storm event in May 2019 caused damage to the Wonthaggi Lifesaving Club observation tower and clubhouse buildings. Following this event, Council organised a meeting to forge a collaborative approach, inviting the Wonthaggi LSC, Life Saving Victoria (LSV), the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and Emergency Services Infrastructure Authority (ESIA).

A representative from each of these organisations now sits on the Project Steering Group who are meeting regularly to ensure progress.

The key focus of the group is to facilitate the provision of temporary facilities for Wonthaggi LSC. The minister for Police and Emergency Services earlier announced funding of $175,000 towards the provision of temporary facilities for the upcoming summer season.

The working group is not involved in planning for a future permanent facility. This will be discussed with Life Saving Victoria and State Government at a future time.

Engineering and structural technical assessments are still being undertaken with reports pending. The next steps will then be determined.
